TY - JOUR AB - The waning prestige of the teaching profession has fueled a decline in the number of aspiring teachers entering preparation programs, compounding staffing challenges already inherent to many schools. In this paper, I show that state-level loan forgiveness policies modestly increase the number of first-year students enrolled in education programs by about 12% but have no overall effect on total enrollment or the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded. Further analyses show that the effect for bachelor’s degrees is masked by heterogeneity in the amount of debt forgiven. This suggests that these policies may be an option to consider, but should be adopted with caution, as effect sizes are small relative to staffing challenges and require a significant investment from the state.
