Alternative schools have emerged as a potential solution offering opportunities for credit recovery and flexible scheduling. Using variation in the timing and proximity of alternative school expansions in Chicago, we find that living within a mile of an alternative school increases a students’ likelihood of enrolling in the school by 28%. We find evidence that while alternative schools may boost high school enrollment and decrease total arrests, they also decrease students’ likelihood of enrolling in college.}, }
